DOLLAR TREE DIY AND A BEAUTIFUL WREATH
If you have been following my blog for any length of time, then you that I LOVE shopping at my local Dollar Tree!
As much as I enjoy shopping in the big box craft stores, the Dollar Tree is a great place to find cute items without spending a ton of money! Plus, the best part, is that you can find tons of seasonal items that are perfect for all of those holiday DIY projects!
For instance, if you’ve been in Dollar Tree lately I KNOW you’ve seen these cute carrots!! I mean…six for a dollar?? You MUST buy them! But if – like me – you got them home and didn’t know what to do with them, then I a DIY wreath for you!
DOLLAR TREE CRAFTS: EASTER CARROT WREATH
If you have never made your own wreath using Dollar Tree items, then you are missing out! You can create the perfect wreath for your front door and nobody would know that it came from the Dollar Tree. For example, during this Facebook Live, I made a gorgeous DIY summer wreath using a pool noodle and some seasonal wall decor!
However, before we get too excited about Summer, today I will be showing you how to create a Spring wreath!
This fun wreath is simple to make and doesn’t involve using a fancy wreath frame. This is because we will be making our wreath base out of a piece of chipboard! – And, if that is not good enough, we will be decorating it with those cute carrots!! {FTC Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links which means I may make a small commission on sales at no additional cost to you.}
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- four (4) packs Easter Carrots
- recycled cardboard – can be a shipping box, cereal box, etc
- orange acrylic paint – I used DecoArt Lantern Orange
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- paintbrush
- orange and green markers
- 2.5″ wired ribbon
- 1/8″ coordinating ribbon
- Scissors
- Pencil
- FREE carrot wreath and price tags pattern
Project Notes:
In regards to wreath forms, I recommend using a cardboard wreath or a thin foam wreath and NOT wire wreath forms. This is because the carrots need a solid base to stick to. Also, if you decide to use a foam wreath, I would recommend using Tacky Glue and NOT hot glue in step 3.
HOW TO MAKE CARROT WREATH:
1. Download, print and cut out the FREE carrot wreath and tag pattern. Trace wreath pattern onto cardboard with a pencil. To download – click on the blue words (above) then right click and select “save as”.
Cut large circle from recycled cardboard with scissors.
Cut a smaller circle from recycled cardboard by piercing the point of the scissors through the center and then cutting out the center circle.
2. Paint the whole wreath form (front, back and sides) with orange acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.
3. Once dry, fit the carrots around the wreath form until you are pleased with the composition. The eight-inch wreath form pattern will fit 20 of the orange twine wrapped carrots.
Remove the carrots and attach them one at a time to the base of your wreath form using a hot glue gun and glue sticks. You can also use liquid craft glue, just allow for drying time.
4. The last carrot was a bit of a tight fit, so gently squeeze the styrofoam carrot between your fingers and thumb, and then insert, securing with glue.
5. Tie a bow with pastel plaid ribbon, cut a triangular notch from each end, and attach to the bottom of the wreath using a dab of hot glue.
6. Trace price tag pattern onto white cardstock and cut with scissors, then hand-write CARROTS 25₵ EACH with a green marker and then outline the tag with an orange marker.
7. Attach the tag to the wreath with a length of skinny yellow ribbon tied in a bow through the plaid bow. Glue a loop of skinny yellow ribbon to the back of the wreath form to create a hanger.
QUICK TIP
If you want to dress up your carrot wreath, even more, try adding faux flowers or Easter miniatures (like a bunny or eggs)!
