Need a last-minute Valentine’s Day craft to make with the kids? Then check out our Valentine string art that can be made in under 30 minutes!
If you have been following the blog for a while then you know I love a good string art project! This is because you can create some really cute holiday home decor pieces by simply using string and other supplies that you have in your craft stash.
With that in mind, and since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to create a brand new string art craft in the shape of a heart!
STRING ART VALENTINES
The project I am making today is a Valentine String Art wall hanging!
However, unlike other string art DIY projects, today’s craft doesn’t involve nails, a piece of scrap wood, or sharp objects!
This means that today’s project is perfect to make if you are wanting to do some crafting with your kids but you don’t want to use a ton of crazy tools or supplies. Plus, this fun project is easy enough for younger kids to make but can be customized in different ways to keep the older kids interested as well.
Speaking of supplies, I decided to use yarn in this project because it allows it to be made faster. However, if you don’t have yarn, you could easily you whatever type of string you have on hand. In the tutorial below, I do list some other yarn/string options that you can use when making this project!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Craft Sticks
- Jumbo Yarn, Red, Pink
- Natural Jute Twine
- Gingham Ribbon, Pink
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Corrugated Cardboard – can use piece of a box
- Acrylic Craft Paint – Dark Brown
- Paintbrush
- Paper Towel
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Heart String Art Template (see below)
HOW TO MAKE VALENTINE STRING ART:
1. To create the sign, line up seven jumbo craft sticks on your work surface. Then attach a jumbo craft stick to the top and bottom with your glue gun.
TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
2. Basecoat the sign with watered-down dark brown acrylic craft paint. Paint quickly and then remove the excess paint with a paper towel. This will give the craft sticks a stained appearance.
TIP: You can also use washable markers, crayons, or even colored pencils to color the jumbo craft sticks.
3. Download, print, and cut out the heart pattern. Enter your email below to have the pattern delivered right to your inbox!
Trace the heart shape onto a scrap of corrugated cardboard with a pencil. Then carefully cut out the heart with scissors.
4. Gather several colors of yarn. For this project, I used red and pink but you could use whatever colors you like.
Then grab two colors of yarn, tie the two ends together in a knot and attach it to the back of the cardboard heart using your glue gun.
5. Start wrapping both strands of yarn around the cardboard heart in a random fashion. Continue wrapping and securing every fifth or sixth wrap with a small dot of glue.
Keep on wrapping the yarn around the heart in a haphazard manner until you can no longer see any cardboard.
Then tie the two ends of the yarn together in a knot and attach it to the back of the cardboard heart using your glue gun.
TIP If you don’t have yarn on hand, you can also use embroidery floss or baker’s twine. However, if you do go that route, you will need to use more of the embroidery floss or baker’s twine, since it’s thinner than the yarn.
6. Attach the string art heart to the craft stick sign using your glue gun. Then press down firmly in the center of the heart to make sure that it adheres well to the craft stick sign.
7. Measure and cut a 12” length of natural jute twine or string with scissors. Then flip the sign over and attach the end of the string to the top right and left-hand sides using your glue gun.
8. Tie a pink gingham ribbon into a bow and cut a notch at the end of the ribbon tails to prevent fraying. Then attach it to the top of the sign using your glue gun.
Once you have added your bow, your Valentine string art is complete and ready to hang!
Overall, I loved how this project turned out and I think it could be a great handmade gift for the kids to make for Valentine’s Day!
Also, if Valentine’s Day is not your favorite holiday, you could make this project for other seasons as well! For example, a four-leaf clover for St. Patrick’s day or an egg for Easter. The possibilities are truly endless!
