Kids Craft: Paper Plate Shamrock For St Patrick’s Day

Use a paper plate, green paint and some markers to create this festive paper plate shamrock just in time for St. Patrick’s Day!

Did you think I was done with my paper plate crafts? Absolutely not! 

Today, we are skipping the colorful rainbows, gold coins, and leprechaun crafts and are breaking out our paper plates! To celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, we are making a shamrock paper plate! – Actually, we are making 3 different shamrocks to be exact!

This easy craft is a great way to keep your little ones busy or as an activity for them to practice their fine motor skills. All you need are a few basic supplies, our FREE printable template, and in about 30 minutes, you will have a house full of shamrocks!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Paper Plates 
• Acrylic Craft Paint – Light Green, Medium Green, Dark Green – there are five shades of green in this set!
• Sponge Dauber
• Paintbrush
• Scissors 
• Permanent Marker, Black
• Pencil
• Shamrock Pattern (you can download it below)

NOTE: When it comes to making this project, you have several options when it comes to plates and sizes. I used a regular-sized paper plate (9 inches in diameter), but you could use a small paper plate for this project. Also, if you don’t have green paint or don’t have time to paint, you can use green paper plates instead.

HOW TO MAKE A PAPER PLATE SHAMROCK: 

1. Gather all supplies. Then, basecoat the inside of a paper plate with light green acrylic craft paint, medium green acrylic craft paint, and dark green acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

2. Download and print the Shamrock pattern, then cut it out with scissors. Trace the shamrock onto each of the three paper plates with a pencil. 

3. Cut out the three shamrocks with scissors, making sure to cut inside the traced lines for a clean, finished project.

4. Using a round sponge dauber and the dark green acrylic craft paint, stamp dots on the surface of the medium green shamrock. Set aside to dry.

TIP: You could also use crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint sticks to apply the patterns to the shamrocks.

5. Using a paintbrush and the medium green acrylic craft paint, apply vertical lines across the light green shamrock. Set aside to dry.

6. Once dry, paint horizontal lines from the top to the bottom of the light green shamrock with the medium green acrylic craft paint to create a plaid pattern. Set aside to dry.

7. Using a paintbrush and the light green acrylic craft paint, apply diagonal lines across the dark green shamrock. Set aside to dry.

8. Outline the dots and diagonal stripes with a black marker. Accent the green plaid shamrock by adding a black plaid pattern with the marker.

Once you are happy with how your shamrocks look, you are ready to display them!

How fun was that! 

You can display these shamrocks on your fridge, mantel, or even turn them into a banner! To turn them into a banner, simply hole punch the shamrocks on each side, then take a piece of ribbon and thread it through the holes. – Instant home decor!
