Easy To Make Paper Plate Mushroom Craft For Kids

Use a paper plate, red paint, and some pom poms to create these adorable paper plate mushrooms that are perfect for kids of all ages!

If you are looking for a simple mushroom craft to make with younger children, then you are in the right place! 

Today, I am sharing how to make an easy paper plate mushroom craft that can be completed in 30 minutes using basic craft tools. For this crafty project, I decided to go the paper plate route because 1) it’s affordable, 2) it’s readily available, and 3) it’s simple! Most mushroom crafts involve using supplies like a toilet paper roll. rocks, stacks of paper, or an egg carton. Now, don’t get me wrong, none of those supplies are bad to use, but sometimes ”easy kids crafts” can be more ”complex”  than what you would like. 

With that in mind, I wanted to create a project that had simple steps and used simple craft materials. So, grab your paper plates and our free pattern and learn how to make a cute mushroom by following our full tutorial below!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Paper Plate 
• Pom Poms, White – you can also use cotton balls
• Craft Paint – Red
• Cardstock – Tan or Brown
• Glue Gun and Glue Sticks 
• Paintbrush
• Scissors 
• Permanent Marker
• Mushroom Pattern (you can download it below)

NOTE: When it comes to making this project, you have several options when it comes to plates and sizes. I used a regular-sized paper plate (9 inches in diameter), but you could use a small paper plate for this project. Also, if you don’t have red paint or don’t have time to paint, you can use red paper plates instead.

HOW TO MAKE PAPER PLATE MUSHROOMS:

1. Gather all supplies. Base coat the outside of the paper plate with red acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

NOTE: For my mushroom, I wanted to go with that ”classic” red and white look; however, you can paint your mushrooms in any color.

2. Fold the paper plate I half, creasing firmly, then cut it in half with scissors.

3. Download and print the Mushroom Pattern, then cut out with scissors. Trace the stem twice onto the tan or brown cardstock. You could also use colored craft foam or craft felt for this project.

4. Cut out the stem patterns with scissors, making sure to cut inside the traced lines for a clean, finished project.

5. Attach the white pom poms to the red mushroom caps using a glue gun and glue sticks.

TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but the drying time will be longer. 

NOTE: If you don’t have white pom poms, you can also cut out small circles from white paper and glue those to your paper plate instead. 

6. Outline the mushroom stems with a black marker.

7. Attach the mushroom cap to the stem at two different heights with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Once the mushroom cap has been attached to your stem, you are ready to display it!

How adorable are these paper plate mushrooms?! I just loved how they turned out! 

This is one of those craft activities that looks great displayed on its own, but can be paired with so many things! For example,  you could place these mushrooms in an indoor fairy garden, stand them beside a row of fairy houses, or place them on a party table as decor next to some gnomes.
