Easy To Make Paper Plate Axolotl Craft For Kids

Use a paper plate, pink paint, and some paper to create this adorable paper plate axolotl craft that is perfect for kids! 

You know I love easy paper plate crafts! I’m back today with another fun craft that is perfect for kids of all ages that features an axolotl! 

If you have never heard of an axolotl, you are in for some interesting facts! The axolotl, which is known as the Mexican walking fish, is a type of salamander that is native to Mexico City. It’s very unique in look, comes in a wide range of colors, and doesn’t go through the process of metamorphosis. 

I never knew any of this until I saw a photo of them, and then I thought, how fun would they be as a kids’ craft project?! So, to turn our little axolotl into a craft, I decided to skip the traditional brown paper craft bag and toilet paper rolls and instead break out my trusty paper plates (which you know I love). In about 30 minutes, I had this adorable paper plate axolotl craft that the kids will love making!

SUPPLIES NEEDED: 

• Paper Plate 
• Craft Paint – three shades of pink
• Chenille Stems, Bright Pink 
• Cardstock – Light Pink, Bright Pink
• Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
• Sponge Dauber
• Paintbrush
• Googly Eyes
• Scissors 
• Black Permanent Marker
• Axolotl Pattern (you can download it below)

NOTE: When it comes to making this project, you have several options when it comes to plates and sizes. I used a regular-sized paper plate (9 inches in diameter), but you could use a small paper plate for this project. Also, if you don’t have yellow paint or don’t have time to paint, you can use pink paper plates instead.

HOW TO MAKE PAPER PLATE AXOLOTL: 

1. Paint the inside of the paper plate light pink acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

2. Download and print the Axolotl Patterns, then cut out with scissors. Trace the head pattern onto the paper plate with a pencil. Cut out with scissors.

3. Attach two wiggle eyes with a glue gun and glue sticks. Create cheeks by dipping a sponge dabber into bright pink acrylic craft paint and stamping on either side of the face. 

4. Trace the outer ears twice onto light pink cardstock and trace the inner ears six times onto bright pink cardstock. You could also use colored craft foam or craft felt for this project.

5. Cut out the Axolotl patterns with scissors, making sure to cut inside the traced lines for a clean, finished project.

6. Attach the bright pink inner ears to the light pink outer ears with a glue gun and glue sticks. Trim any excess bright pink cardstock with scissors.

TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

7. Cut two bright pink chenille stems into six pieces with scissors. Attach one chenille stem to the center of each inner ear with a glue gun and glue sticks. 

8. Glue the ears to the right and left sides of the back of the paper plate axolotl with a glue gun and glue sticks.

9. To finish, draw a smile from cheek to cheek with a black marker.

Once the mouth has been drawn onto your axolotl, you are ready to display it! 

How cute is this project? This craft is a great way to introduce your kids to the axolotl and could easily be worked into their ocean themed studies if you homeschool, since the axolotl is on the endangered species list.
