It’s the most wonderful time of the year, which means it’s the perfect time to make some DIY Christmas Ornaments! Today I will be showing you how to create your own custom wood round ornament, and I will be sharing a quick roundup of some other Cricut ornament ideas!
One of my favorite Christmas crafts to make during the holiday season is handmade ornaments!
Handmade ornaments hold a special place in my heart because they represent the people that have been in your life or the places you have traveled to. As a military wife, I know the feeling of moving every few years, leaving friends behind, and having ”the look” of Christmas change. This is why I cherish handmade ornaments in general and love decorating my own Christmas tree with ornaments I have received over the years.
So, whether you are a military wife, are part of an ornament exchange, or just need a last-minute gift, today I am sharing with you a variety of Christmas ornament ideas to get your creative juices flowing!
CRICUT ORNAMENT IDEAS: WOOD ROUND ORNAMENT
As much as I love glitter ornaments, felt ornaments, and paper ornaments, sometimes I just don’t have the time or patience to create those types of projects from scratch. Instead, I would much rather gather up some supplies I already have and jump into Cricut Design Space for great project ideas!
That mindset is how this wood round ornament was born! hahaha
If you are like me and are wanting to make simple but amazing ornaments, then check out my DIY below. Also, make sure you scroll down to the bottom of this post because I will be sharing a quick roundup of some other Cricut Christmas ornaments!

HOW TO MAKE A WOOD ROUND ORNAMENT:
PAINTING:
1. Apply stain to about 2/3 of the wood round. Let dry until it is not tacky to the touch.
2. Use masking tape or painters tape to create a crisp line, then paint the remainder of the wood round with white paint.
3. Once the stain and paint are completely dry, add a layer of mod podge as a sealant. If there is no barrier between the stain and the vinyl, the oils in the stain will break down the adhesive on the vinyl.
4. In Design Space create your phrase by using the text tool. Size according to wood round used. I used the font Avenir and Montens to create my design. If you don’t have this font, you can use any sans serf and script font.
NOTE: If using a script font in Design Space, don’t forget to kern your letters (kern = connecting the letter to cut as one piece).
CUTTING, WEEDING, AND VINYL TRANSFER:
5. Once designed and sized accordingly, select make it in Design Space. Adjust the machine’s setting or material dial to custom, washi sheet. Fonts that have small, delicate cuts in the letters will use this setting to help them cut smoothly.
Load the permanent vinyl to your machine on the standard grip mat and hit “go”. I used two colors of vinyl – one for the stained part of the ornament and one for the painted. You can use the same color for both if you prefer!
6. When the cuts are complete, weed around and inside the letters of the vinyl by using your weeding tool.
7. After the designs are completely weeded, cut off a piece of transfer tape the size of the vinyl and apply the transfer tape using pressure with the scrapper tool. This is done in order to get the vinyl off its carrier sheet and onto the surface of the project.
8. Turn the entire design face down and begin to gently apply pressure and pull the vinyl’s carrier sheet off and away from the transfer tape.
9. Place the weeded vinyl with the transfer tape on top of the wood round.
10. Once enough pressure had been applied slowly remove the transfer tape, rolling it away and off the round. The vinyl will remain on your project.
DECORATING:
11. Lastly, using hot glue attach the greenery to the wood and top it with a small bow. Thread ribbon through the top to create a hanging attachment.
NOTE: If the wood round does not have a pre-made hole, create one using a small drill bit.
Once you are happy with how your ornament looks, you are ready to gift it or hang it on your tree!
