DIY Winter farmhouse sign and free svg file
I was one of those people who took down my Christmas decorations before the new year – but I’m not QUITE ready to go back to my “every day” home decor. I spotted this wood round at Home Depot, grabbed some leftover greenery and some vinyl and voila! A winter farmhouse sign that is perfect for your mantel or front door. {FTC Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links which means I may make a commission on sales at no additional cost to you.}

TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE a WINTER farmhouse sign
Staining the Wood
1. Start by staining the wood round with a foam brush in a well ventilated area so it has time to dry. Be sure to stain along the grain of the wood.
2. Using an old cloth or paper towel begin wiping the stain away. Depending on the color and brand of stain you have to do this quickly so the wood doesn’t soak too much stain.
3. Allow 12-24 hours for the stain to set and dry – until it no longer leaves color when touched.
Applying Mod Podge
1. Apply a very thin layer of Mod Podge (or other sealant) with a foam brush. Be
sure that each stroke goes in the same direction each time and is a smooth, thin,
even layer.
2. Allow coat of Mod Podge to dry completely.

5. Adjust SVG size based on wood round size. Be sure to leave enough space for decorative finishes at the top of wood round.
Cutting, WeEding, and Transfering Vinyl
1. Once sized accordingly, adjust your machine’s setting or material dial to vinyl. Load the vinyl to your machine on your mat and hit “go”.
2. After the cut is complete, pull the negative vinyl off and away from the letters using your weeding tool. You will weed around the outside of the letters and the small parts inside any letter that is enclosed (ex. a,e,o ).
3. Cut off a piece of transfer tape the size of your cut vinyl and apply. Because you are working with a large design peel away small parts of the transfer tape backing at a time, smoothing with your scraper as you go.
4. Next, turn the entire design face down and begin gently pulling the vinyl’s plastic backing away from the transfer tape. Start at one corner and roll it away slowly while applying pressure. Be sure none of your vinyl comes off with your backing!
Applying Vinyl
1. Determine the middle of your wood round. Be sure to leave equal amount of
space on each side and enough room at the top of the wood round to fit your bow
without covering the design.
2. Lay the vinyl/transfer tape lightly on top of the wood round, but do not adhere until it is placed exactly where you want it. Once you are happy with the location begin to apply pressure and smooth over the design using your scraper.
3. Slowly remove the transfer tape by starting at one corner and very carefully and slowly rolling it away and off the wood. Be careful of the small vinyl pieces when removing the transfer tape. If needed you can use your weeding tool to hold the small pieces in place as you roll away the transfer tape.
Applying JutE Cord
1. Flip the sign over so that you are looking at the unfinished side.
2. Measure out the length needed for the jute cord to allow the sign to hang from door
hook at desired length (if hanging).
3. Make a triangle like shape with your jute cord and apply staples liberally.
Adding Finishing Touches
1. Flip sign back over and use glue gun to apply floral picks and bow the top of the sign.
Now doesn’t this make those long winter months a little brighter?
