Are you looking to create a hygge ornament? Then check out our Faux Embroidered Scandinavian Felt Ornaments which are simple to create, perfect for decorating the tree, and ideal for giving out as small gifts!
The word hygge is a Danish word that loosely translates into coziness and comfort! The word has become more popular in recent years with people trying to cultivate a ”hygge lifestyle” that centers around comfortable conviviality, simple pleasures, and nurturing relationships.
In the world we live in today, which is driven by social media and a long to-do list, I can totally appreciate a ”hygge lifestyle”! So, to bring a little bit of that lifestyle into all of our lives during this busy holiday season, I say we sit down, relax, and make a Christmas ornament (or a hygge ornament – lol)!
HYGGE CHRISTMAS IDEA: SCANDINAVIAN FELT ORNAMENTS
Scandinavian decor (especially during the Christmas season) has always given me that ”hygge feel”! It’s warm, cozy, inviting, and (in this crafter’s opinion) downright cute!
With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to use Scandinavian decor as inspiration for creating a felt hygge ornament!
The felt ornaments that I will be showing you how to make today are simple handmade pieces that both adults and kids will love to create. Plus, they would be the perfect topper or tag for any gift basket or gift card!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Felt Craft Sheets – Red and White
- Dimensional Fabric Paint – Slick Red and Slick White
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Chipboard or Poster Board
- Permanent Marker or Chalk Pencil
- Ribbons – Red and White (you could also use colorful mini skeins of yarn)
- Scissors
- Paper Towels
- Toothpicks
- Ornament Patterns
HOW TO MAKE SCANDINAVIAN FELT ORNAMENTS:
1. Download, print and cut out Ornament Patterns. If you are going to create a lot of ornaments, trace patterns onto chipboard and cut out for sturdiness.
Trace patterns onto red and white craft felt with a permanent marker, and then cut out with scissors. Using a non-permanent marker on felt will cause the ink to transfer onto your hands and the surrounding felt.
TIP: Cut inside the traced lines to ensure you end up with a clean finished project.
2. Gently tap the tip of the fabric paint container onto a paper towel and then start the paint flowing on the towel to prevent any blobs of paint. The tapping will also prevent air bubbles. Practice on the paper towel, squeezing the paint bottle to get an even flow.
If you do end up with a paint blob, use a toothpick to remove it.
Using the photo as a guide, add the faux embroidery stitches with dimensional fabric paint. Use red paint on white ornaments and white paint on red ornaments.
For my ornaments I decided to go with traditional Scandinavian patterns, however, you could lean more toward playful stripe patterns or something similar.
Once you are done decorating your ornaments, set them aside to dry.
TIP: There are so many beautiful ways that you can decorate these ornaments! Due to that, I recommend printing out some extra pattern sheets so you and your kids can draw out different designs before you add them to your felt pieces.
TIP: If you are making this ornament for a family member and want to personalize it with their name, Google something like ” Scandinavian name personalization Christmas” and you can see tons of designs that incorporate a person’s name.
3. Measure and cut a twelve-inch length of coordinating ribbon for each ornament. Knot the ends of each ribbon to create a loop. Flip the ornaments over and attach the ribbon loop to the top center of each ornament to create the hanger.
Once you are happy with how your ornament looks, you are ready to hang it on the Christmas tree!
These felt ornaments were so easy to create and really allowed me to have some true quiet time while crafting! This quiet time then got me thinking about Christmas eve and how this would be the perfect project to keep little ones busy while you are either cooking or wrapping gifts. I may have to break this project out again for my little nieces and nephews (lol)!
Also, as a final thought, if you want to make this project more ”adult” and what to use it for a girls’ craft night, then you could swap out the felt for another material. For example, you could make a ceramic ornament or make a set of linen napkins! Either way, you will have so much fun making these ornaments, and decorating your Christmas tree!
