I am always looking for a reason to add garland decoration to my mantel and love I DIY, but I always used paper. Then I discovered Bernat Yarn at JOANN and it has changed the way I create!
DIY GARLAND DECORATION WITH YARN
I am not a knitter. Or crocheter. Or any other things you do with yarn. I WANT to be – because there are so many textures and beautiful colors, but always thought it was just too hard. I recently made my first finger knit blanket and had a blast, so decided to branch out in to other projects and OH MY GOSH!!! These DIY garland decorations are easy enough that I can do them while watching tv and with all of the amazing yarn options available I can make them for any theme or color palette! {FTC Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by JOANN – but the opinions and the project are mine all mine! SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Yarn – almost any yarn will do – and you don’t need a ton of it! I pulled together these three Bernat yarns because they had different patterns and textures but were all the same color family:
- Fiskars Non-Stick Scissors – these are the greatest scissors EVER!!!!
- Piece of cardboard (cereal box works great!)
TUTORIAL FOR FRINGE AND TASSEL GARLAND DECORATION:
TO CREATE THE FRINGE GARLAND:
1. Cut a piece of yarn the length you want your garland to be. Include about six inches on each end for a “tail”.
2. Decide how long you want the fringe to be, double it and cut.
3. Cut a piece of chipboard the same length of the fringe yarn.
4. Wrap the yarn around the chipboard multiple times (this will create each individual fringe), then cut at both ends. You can always make more if you need it!
5. Fold a piece of fringe yarn in half, put the loop under the long yarn (doesn’t matter where you start), then pull the ends of the fringe through the loop.
6. Place the second loop next to the first and repeat until your garland is as long as you want it.
TO CREATE THE TASSEL:
1. Wrap yarn around the chipboard until you get to your desired tassel thickness.
2. Cut a piece of yarn approx. 6-8 inches. Thread underneath the wrapped yarn and tie in a knot at the top.
3. Cut the yarn at the opposite end of the chipboard.
4. Cut another piece of 6-8 inch yarn. Loop around the tassel approx. one inch from the top and tie a knot.
5. Wrap tails in opposite directions then tie in a knot.
6. Trim ends and tuck tails in to tassel head.
7. Repeat steps 1-6.
8. Tie tassel to end of garland, trim excess yarn and tuck tails in to the tassel head.
TUTORIAL FOR FAUX BRAIDED GARLAND DECORATION
1. Grab a friend and a skein of yarn. Measure yarn twice as long as you want your garland.
2. Pass skein of yarn back and forth – 10-12 times for a thinner garland, more for a thicker garland. Make sure your yarn stays taut!
3. Find the center of your garland and start twisting yarn in opposite directions, walking backwards as you work.
4. Holding the ends of the garland walk towards each other. Garland will naturally twist in to a braid.
5. Gently pull the end to work out any kinks, then tie off the loose end.
Once you start making these yarn garlands you won’t be able to stop! Between all of the texture combinations, color palettes and yarn types the possibilities are endless. I can’t wait to see what you create!
