As we’re spending more time inside I think we’ve all started to look at our decor in a new way. Come on in and see how easy it is to turn a plain old large basket in to a useful piece of farmhouse home decor!
{Disclosure: This is a sponsored post from Rust-Oleum but the opinions and projects are mine all mine!} In case you didn’t know, two of my favorite things in the world are DIY home decor and Rust-Oleum spray paint! Now that we’re spending so much time at home I’ve been spray painting ALL the things…including this beauty I brought home from JoAnn!
DIY FARMHOUSE DECOR: HOW TO PAINT A LARGE BASKET
When shopping at a craft store like JoAnn, NEVER overlook their home decor departments! You can find all kinds of things that you can easily makeover in different ways so they can match your own style and decor.
One thing that I personally love looking at in JoAnn is their decorative baskets! This is because they offer a wide variety of beautiful baskets in different sizes and different styles. For instance, the last time I was at a JoAnn’s store in person, they had vintage baskets, simple wire baskets, large wicker baskets, and more! Plus, they were all at a good price, since I used my JoAnn coupons.
However, it was this round tapered utility basket that caught my DIY eye!
I grabbed this specific basket because I am always looking for decorative storage ideas that I can use either in my living room or around my coffee table. This storage basket was the perfect solution to my storage problems but I did not like the color (which meant this basket sat in my home unused for several months). The natural color did not fit with our ”coastal farmhouse style”, so thankfully – JoAnn also sells about a bajillion colors of Rust-Oleum!
With a few coats of spray paint, I was able to add a pop of color to this plain basket and give it a new look! {FTC disclosure: This blog post contains affiliate links which means I may make a small commission on any sales at no additional cost to you.}
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Rust-Oleum spray paint (we used 2x Ultra Cover Paint + Primer in White)
- Rust-Oleum spray paint trigger
- Round Tapered Utility Basket from JoAnn
- paint triangles (if needed)
TUTORIAL: How to Paint a Large Basket
1. Gently clean off any dust/dirt on your basket. I used a small brush that comes with a dust pan.
2. Place basket opening side down (this means that the bottom of the basket will be facing up towards you) and begin painting.
Note – Depending on the type of basket you bought or the tightness of the weave (this one is pretty loose) you are going to use a LOT more paint than you think. The upside – the inside of the basket was 90% done when we flipped it over!
3. Flip over (if necessary) and paint the inside of the basket. Let dry.
And voila! An easy way to customize any basket to fit your home decor.
As you can see in the photos above, I used our basket to store extra pillows and blankets in our living room. I love how it gives off a tidy look while still being cozy and that it blends in with our other cute display of coastal items. Plus, it fits perfectly in that awkward space at the bottom of our mantel!
CREATIVE WAYS TO USE BASKETS
If you are loving this DIY but are still unsure about how you could use a basket in your own home, then I’m here to help! Below are some of my favorite ways to use baskets when it comes to storage.
- Remote Controls – This is a great option if you want all your remotes for your devices in one place.
- Guest Bedroom – You can use baskets to store roll guest towels or toilet paper.
- Board Games – If you don’t like the board games sitting out themselves, having them all in a basket makes everything look much neater
- Small Plants or Faux Flowers – Whether your plants are real or fake, putting them in a basket definitely makes them look cuter!
- Laundry Room – If you don’t like the look of your laundry products sitting out for everyone to see, using baskets is a great way to hide those products and the packaging.
So, from basic white to bright pink to anything in between – you can turn any boring basket into the focal point of any room. Happy painting!
