There is nothing better than DIY Dollar Tree crafts to create custom home decor! Making your own allows you to customize the color, the phrasing, the placement – plus there is nothing more satisfying than creating something you love for the home you love!
DOLLAR TREE FARMHOUSE DIY
Raise your hand if you love farmhouse signs or farmhouse style decor! – My hand is up!
Now raise your hand if you think that all of that beautiful farmhouse decor is expensive! – Again my hand is up (lol)!
As much as I love that farmhouse look in my own home, I’m not ready to spend a ton of money on wall art and small decor pieces. So, after spending some time researching farmhouse decor ideas, I came up with a project that is easy to make and uses Dollar Store items!
DIY DOLLAR TREE CRAFTS: FARMHOUSE HOME DECOR
If you have been following my blog for any length of time, then you know that I LOVE Dollar Store Crafts! I love being able to go down the aisles and find items like wooden beads, metal labels, and even small bottles of Mod Podge, for a fraction of what you would pay at the craft store. Plus, the best part, is that shopping at the Dollar Store is a great way to build up my craft supplies without breaking the bank!
On a recent trip, some items that caught my eye were the Dollar Store picture frames. Most of their picture frames are black and have a modern look to them. However, with a couple coats of paint, you can transform that modern frame into a farmhouse decoration!
Don’t believe me? Then check scroll down to see how I brought that farmhouse feel into our home by creating my own birds’ nest home decor (from a picture frame)! {FTC Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links which means I may make a small commission on sales at no additional cost to you.}

Project Notes:
To create today’s DIY farmhouse decor, I am using products from my local Dollar Tree. However, you could also find these items at your local Dollar Store.
HOW TO MAKE DIY FARMHOUSE HOME DECOR CRAFT:
1. Open Model Magic and create three eggs that will fit into the nest. Set aside for 24 hours to dry.
TIP: If you are looking for a simple way to store your Model Magic, I recommend storing the excess in a plastic bag.
2. Remove the glass and backer from the frame. Rough up the plastic frame with sandpaper, then basecoat with dark brown craft paint. Set aside to dry.
TIP: If you are using bright colors of paint instead of neutral colors, then you may want to paint a base coat of white paint on your frame first. By doing this, it will help your paint color to appear brighter once it is fully dry.
Dry brush robins egg blue paint all over frame, leaving some of the dark brown peeking through.
Paint air-dry clay eggs with robins egg blue paint. Set aside to dry.
3. Measure and cut weathered wood decorative paper to fit inside frame.
Add letter stickers at bottom to spell NEST. Measure and cut a scrap of lace trim and glue to decorative paper above the word NEST.
TIP: If you don’t have letter stickers, you can also use your Cricut Maker (or Cricut Explore Air) and some black vinyl to create your own NEST letters/word.
4. Place eggs on a paper towel, load paint brush with dark brown craft paint and then speckle the eggs by running your thumb across the bristles. Set aside to dry.
5. Glue several scraps of lace inside bottom of the nest and then secure the eggs in the nest on top of the lace.
6. Place decorative paper and backer inside the picture frame. To finish, attach completed birds’ nest to the decorative paper with the glue gun and glue sticks.
Set on a shelf or perch on your mantel and enjoy!
I loved how this project turned out and I’m thinking I might have to turn this frame into a set of three!
PRINTABLE INSTRUCTIONS AND ONE MORE THOUGHT
If you are loving this Dollar Store craft idea, but are not crazy about the farmhouse look, that is ok! You can replicate this DIY into different styles by simply changing the colors and the item in the middle. For example, if your home has more of a coastal feel, then you could replace the birds’ nest with a starfish or some shells, and voila! The possibilities are endless!
Finally, if you need some written instructions, then we have you covered! Check out the instructions box below to see all of the details for this project. Plus, you can even print them or pin them to your favorite Pinterest board!
