EASY CRICUT JOY PROJECT FARMHOUSE ROUNDS:
I’ve got ALL the Cricut machines. I love and use my larger machine for big projects, but my Cricut Joy (aka Cricut’s small machine) has become my go-to for smaller projects like these. I can put it on my desk, and use it in the living room on my coffee table while watching tv! I’m no longer tied to making projects only in my craft room. My Cricut Joy is the perfect companion because it uses software I already understand (I am too old to learn new stuff!) and gives me the freedom to create on the go!
{FTC disclosure: This blog post contains affiliate links which means I may make a small commission on any sales at no additional cost to you.} Note – these instructions are for the Cricut Joy, but you can easily create this with the Cricut Explore Air or Cricut Maker machine.
BEFORE WE START CRAFTING, LET’S TALK ABOUT SMART VINYL:
You may have skipped to the supply list and saw that there are no Cricut Joy mats listed. This is because when you use Cricut’s new Smart Vinyl you don’t need to use a mat!
Yes, I said you don’t need to use a mat!
Cricut’s new Smart Materials are just that, smart! You can feed them through your Cricut Joy, Explore 3, or Maker 3, and the software in the machine does the rest of the work for you! I talk more about Smart Materials in this post where I unbox the Cricut Explore 3. However, in a nutshell, the new smart materials allows you to create easy Cricut projects in less time using the concept of matless cutting. Also, it helps you to cut down on the extra cost of buying supplies because the software in your Cricut machine will tell you how much material you need for your project.
Plus, the best part, is that the new Smart Materials come in all your favorite material types, like the following:
- Smart Iron-On
- Smart Iron-On Glitter
- Smart Iron-On Shimmer
- Smart Iron-On Holographic
- Smart Vinyl Permanent
- Smart Vinyl Removable
- Smart Label Writable Vinyl
- Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock
For all of my Cricut newbies out there, Smart Vinyl is a great place to start if you are wanting to make some easy crafts with your Cricut. So, I highly recommend that you check it out, if you have been on the fence about Cricut in general.
Speaking of being on the fence, make sure you scroll down to the bottom of this post because I also share my thoughts on the Cricut Joy and why I love it so much!

WAIT, BETH! I WANT TO MAKE THIS PROJECT BUT I DON’T HAVE ANY CRICUT SMART MATERIALS:
If you are wanting to make this project and don’t have any Cricut Smart Materials, that is perfectly fine!
The good news is that you can still make this project using regular vinyl and the Cricut mats that you have on hand. All you need to do is when you get to the section ”Cutting the Vinyl”, simply select “On Mat” and place the vinyl on your Joy cutting mat.
HOW TO MAKE EASY CRICUT JOY PROJECT FARMHOUSE ROUNDS:
Prep the Wood Rounds:
1. First thing first – paint one side of all the wood circles and leave it to dry fully.
2. Paint the reverse sides of all the wood circles and leave it to dry fully.
3. Add a small amount of both paint colors and mix for a light gray color. On the white painted sides of the circle, paint three evenly spaced lines using a ruler to keep the lines straight.

5. Maintain sizes at about 5.25” wide to fit within the 6” wood circles.
6. Highlight the word along with the leaf art together and select “attach” to join the separate images. Do this with the word “family” as well.
7. Adjust the color of the words along with the leaf art to white and maintain the other words in black to match Smart Vinyl material colors.
Cutting the Vinyl:
1. Ensure the machine is set to Cricut Joy and select “Make It” in Design Space.
2. Choose “Without Mat” as the option for cutting when using Smart Vinyl. If you are using regular vinyl select “On Mat” and place vinyl on Joy cutting mat.
3. Set material type to Smart Vinyl (or Vinyl if using regular vinyl).
4. Follow prompts for loading the mat into the Cricut Joy and cutting the Smart Vinyl. When prompted, unload the vinyl from the cutting machine.
Applying the Vinyl to the Wood Circles:
1. Using the weeding tool, peel away the excess vinyl around the images and discard.
2. Cut a piece of transfer tape a bit larger than the size of the word or image.
3. Peel away the transfer tape backing and place the transfer tape overtop of the cut image. Gently rub the vinyl to help it stick to the transfer tape.
4. Peel away the vinyl backing and place the image on to the wood circle. The white lettering goes on the relic painted side of the circles and the black lettering goes on the white painted side of the circles.
5. Gently rub the vinyl to help it stick to the wood. You can use a Cricut scraper tool or your finger nails for this.
6. Carefully and slowly peel away the transfer tape.
7. Repeat with the remaining vinyl images and wood circles.
And voila! You can display these in your tiered stands, add a bow and some string and turn them in to wall hangings, etc.
MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE CRICUT JOY
Are you still on the fence about grabbing this little guy? If you’d asked me before I would have told you I mostly made “big” projects so had no use for such a tiny machine. The truth though? From water bottles and mugs to greeting cards to cupcake toppers to holiday decor to letters and phrases for different projects, most of the things I create with my Cricut are smaller and the Joy is THE perfect size – even for long cuts for signs and other home decor pieces.
The small size of the Cricut Joy makes it portable, which opens up a world of possibilities! Teachers can use it for school projects, kids can use it on the dining room table, your best friend can borrow it at a crop, the list goes on and on! You can still use your own designs in Cricut Design Space and if you’ve got Cricut Access all of those images are available for the Cricut Joy as well. Did I mention you can use the app on your mobile device? In this little machine you get the technology and the design capabilities and quality of the larger machines, but in a handy tool that is perfect for small spaces and creating on the go.
If you want to see some more ideas on how you can use your Cricut Joy, check out my projects here! On the blog, I have shared a wide variety of Cricut Joy projects ranging from mugs, wood decor, and even wall decor. It might sound crazy that you can make so much with this little item, but it’s truly a small machine that packs a big crafty punch!
