Are you confused about all the social media talk surrounding the Cricut Explore and the Cricut Explore Air? If so, then this post is for you! Today, I am going to talk about the differences between the two machines, plus share some other exciting Cricut news!
I’ve seen some confusion on social media about the difference between the original Explore and the Explore Air…especially from current Explore users concerned that their machine isn’t the latest and greatest on the market. Original Explore owners (like me) never fear! I just spent the last week at Cricut HQ and got the scoop. {FTC Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links so I may make a little money if you buy something!}
Ordering from cricut.com? Use code CRICUTCREATORS10 for 10% off and FREE shipping on any order over $50. Includes sale and clearance prices, does not include machines (anything with a plug). Cricut items can also be found at HSN, Amazon, and JOANN stores.
Ordering from amazon.com? Then check out my Cricut Tools and Accessories page!
There are only two differences between the original Cricut Explore and the Cricut Explore Air:
The base color: the original Explore is green or lavender at the base – the Explore Air has a variety of base colors, including gold!
The wireless adapter: the original Explore requires an external bluetooth adapter (photo below) – the Explore Air has the bluetooth adapter built in.
So what does this mean for you if you already own the original Cricut Explore? If you have already purchased the bluetooth adapter then you are all set! Simply plug it in to your Explore, sync it with your computer, and you are ready to go.
If you are not technologically savvy (also like me) this cute and informative video from Crafts By Two will walk you through the process in just a few minutes.
Why is this information so important and exciting? Last night Cricut released an iPad app so you can now design anywhere you have internet access! HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!! Soccer games, waiting at the doctor’s office, on vacation – if you own a Cricut Explore you now have access to the ENTIRE Design Space software system (up until now the iPad app only allowed us to do Make It Now projects). I was super super super fortunate to have access to the iPad app while it was still in beta and I can tell you that it has literally changed the way I create. I can work on projects/ideas no matter where I am!
I hope this post helps clarify questions folks might have – if you’ve got other questions please feel free to post here and I’ll be happy to find out the answers for you (if I don’t know them myself). You can also find out more about the Explore Air on cricut.com.

As an owner of the original Explore I love the new updates. But they need to make customers more aware of the fact the new cutting blade is different and much improved. It is what makes it cut sooo much better.
Happy Crafting!!

Janie I agree that the new blade is AMAZING!!!!!!!

What I want to know is which is better (read, more reliable) the original with the adapter or the new, all-in-one unit. I’ve held off on this purchase because I’ve heard terrible things about getting it work and the usability of the Design Space software. I’m wondering if there are any comparisons of these two units (head to head) out there?
Beth says
Hey Christine! I’ve got the one with the external adapter but I would imagine having the internal one would just be easier logistically? If you have concerns about design space my best suggestion is to actually try it out before you buy the machine. You can login and create an account and play around with it all you want to! The only thing you can’t do is cut. It is a great way to "try before you buy". I’m actually pretty surprised you’ve heard such bad things about it, I am not that technologically savvy 😉 but was able to pick it up in just a few minutes and it has been a dream to use!

So glad to find your new blog site! Congrats on your new "job" of being "the voice!" Sounds like you are going to be very busy and am happy to be hearing you, literally! I purchased my Cricut Explore the day after meeting Ashish in person, and have been using it tons! Using it every week if not more often than that. My hubby bought me a new laptop so that I could use the adapter.
Beth says
Thanks so much Beverly…I’m telling you being wireless is going to rock your world! 🙂

I can’t afford an iPad. I do, however, have a Kindle Fire HD tablet. Will Cricut be coming out with an app for my tablet any time soon?
Beth says
Betty that is a great question. Let me ask around and see if I can find you an answer!
Beth says
ok Betty – I asked…and while there isn’t a timeline for a "non-ipad" app, they have it on their radar! I know that isn’t super helpful though. 😉
